As a newborn baby photographer, the scheduling of a baby’s photography session soon after they are born is always one of the elements towards a successful session. Baby Charlotte came in for her close up at my home photography studio in Sheung Wan, when she was only 10 days new. Very often this is a perfect window to capture newborns because they are still sleeping heavily after a good feed and still flexible for those gorgeous curled up shots that I love so much. Baby Charlotte had the most adorable squishy cheeks and she was quite snug in my new posing bean bag.
Over the years I have always endeavoured to improve and streamline the flow of my sessions. To that end, I have started to move away from using the standard large industry standard newborn photography bean bag, to a more compact innovative one that fully supports the baby and is much more suitable for cozier home spaces. I have also in the last few months switched to enjoy the reliability of a continuous LED photography light where possible, with a large diffuser, over natural window light. While I still love working with natural light, it doesn’t always offer the best results on darker days and I have hated not having consistency with that in my photoshoots.
Our session with baby Charlotte was absolutely lovely. She was a star model who was only too happy to sleep after a good feed and wrap. She started to stir a little towards the end of the session, when she was nearing another feed, but we had already managed to capture a great range of macro close ups and stylised newborn poses. For the family portrait with her mum, as she was awake again, we captured a few simple elegant portraits. This included a lovely magic one with Charlotte looking directly at the camera while in her Mama's arms. My heart always does a happy dance when I am able to capture a moment that will make beautiful wall art and stand the test of time.
I am a Hong Kong based photographer specialising exclusively in newborn and baby portraits, establishing Lullaby Images in 2016. I have extensive training in newborn baby posing and safety. I am a mum to a fiercely independent toddler who loves little adventures. With both professional and personal experience with tiny humans, baby safety and comfort is at the heart of all my photo sessions.
I hate saying 'no'. Help me say it less by reaching out to talk about your newborn photography session well before your due date. I only take on a limited number of bookings a month and many Mamas reach out to me in their second trimester to book in their sesion.
